I keep getting asked this. Usually by good engineers who saw the title on a job posting, googled it, and came away more confused than before. So let me try to explain it the way I'd explain it over coffee.
The short version: you're an engineer, but you don't sit at headquarters building the product. You sit with the customer, and you make the product work for them. In their environment. With their weird legacy systems and their politics and their data that looks nothing like the clean demo data.
The name is borrowed from the military. Forward deployed means stationed where things actually happen. Palantir made the title famous, and now with AI companies it's everywhere, because it turns out a general purpose model is not the same thing as a solved business problem. Somebody has to close that gap. That somebody is you.
Let me give you a real flavor of the work. Monday you're on a call with a logistics company trying to understand why their planners ignore the tool they bought. Not how the tool works. Why humans ignore it. Tuesday and Wednesday you're writing an integration against a system that was installed before you graduated, and the one person who understood it retired. Thursday you demo something rough but working, and you watch the room change when a planner says "wait, it can do that?" Friday you write an angry-but-polite doc to your product team explaining that a feature everyone loves internally is unusable in the field.
That Friday doc is the part people miss. A consultant delivers and leaves. You don't. Everything you learn on site flows back into the product. Half the value of the role is that you're the company's eyes.
Is it engineering? Yes, genuinely. You write real code. But nobody is grading your architecture. Your code gets graded on whether it worked in front of the customer on Thursday. Some of the code I shipped in this kind of role would make my old tech lead physically ill. It also saved the account.
Now the question people actually want answered: would I be good at this?
Honestly, most engineers wouldn't, and that's fine. Here's my rough test.
Do you get annoyed when a ticket is vague, or curious? Because there are no tickets here. There's a frustrated VP and a fuzzy goal, and the first week of any engagement is figuring out what the problem even is. Half the time it's not the problem they told you it was.
Can you sit in a room with people who don't code and not be insufferable about it? You will spend a lot of time translating. Business pain into technical plans, technical limits into words an operations manager can use in her own meetings. If jargon is your comfort blanket, this will hurt.
And the big one: when something breaks at the customer site at 6pm, are you the person who quietly starts fixing it, or the person who looks around for whoever owns this? There is no whoever. You own it.
The people I've seen thrive tend to be full stack generalists who kept drifting toward the product side, ex-consultants who can genuinely build, and former founders. People who get a little restless when a role is too narrow.
Who should skip it? If what you love is going deep, real specialization, clean code as craft, predictable weeks with few meetings, stay in core engineering. Seriously. That's not settling, it's a different and equally good career. This job has travel, customer pressure, and duct tape. Better to know now.
One last thing, because I think it's the most underrated part. After a couple of years doing this you end up with a strange and valuable mix: you can build, you understand customers, and you know how businesses actually make decisions. Look at how many Palantir FDEs went on to found companies. That's not an accident. This role is basically founder school with a salary.
